CAREER PROFILE

Whilst at University Mary undertook research into Agri-Environment Schemes and their effectiveness in upland areas and Environmental Impact Assessment of offshore wind turbines.

Her MSc thesis involved the evaluation of a river in the North East of England as a possible location for the re-introduction of the freshwater pearl mussel for the Environment Agency.

Mary is licensed by Natural England to undertake great crested newt surveys in all counties of England.

She subsequently worked on wetland reserves management for the Wildlife Trust in Norfolk, including grazing and scrub management, water quality and aquatic vegetation surveying and volunteer management.

Her main areas of work for E3 are surveying for protected species including great crested newts, white-clawed crayfish, water vole, freshwater pearl mussel and otter. She has also undertaken habitat suitability surveys for freshwater pearl mussels in the North East of England.

Current projects include a range of European Protected Species licensing works, assessment of development sites for protected species, BREEAM and CSH assessments and watercourse surveys.

SOME RELEVANT PROJECTS UNDERTAKEN

  • Undertaking numerous watercourse surveys and creating mitigation plans to minimise the impact of development on protected species such as white-clawed crayfish, otter and water vole.
  • Great crested newt survey, including ponds in the northeast of England and southern Scotland to assess population abundance for a range of developments including minerals and housing sites.
  • A range of protected species licensing works, particularly for bats, ranging from single dwelling conversions to meeting rooms and schools.
  • Completion of a number of BREEAM and CSH assessments including schools, housing, healthcare and offices.
  • Assessment of urban green space and brown field sites for botanical and protected species interest.
  • A white-clawed crayfish rescue in Cumbria.
  • White clawed crayfish surveys to establish presence and abundance in Northumberland and Cumbria.
