CAREER PROFILE
Paul is a very experienced birder and ornithologist with over 23 years experience including 12 years professional ecological experience with a variety of organisations.
Prior to joining E3, Paul undertook a wide range of projects for, amongst others, the RSPB, the British Trust for Ornithology, three Bird Observatories, two Wildlife Trusts and local authorities.
Paul joined E3 in 2003 and soon established himself as an important part of our ecology team, building on his already established reputation, both in the North East and nationally.
Recent work has included assessment of development impacts on the bird species of a number of SPAs, Ramsar sites and SSSIs, including the Northumberland Coast, the Teesmouth and Cleveland Coast, Beinn Dearag, the Muirkirk and North Lowther Uplands, the Beauly Firth, the Firth of Forth and the Humber Estuary.
He has also undertaken ornithological survey and assessment for a large number of wind farms, several powerlines and a number of gravel extraction, opencast coal, flood defence, road and housing sites.
Paul has published a number of papers and articles in the ornithological press, including the peer reviewed British Birds, along with Birding World and Birdwatch.
He has recently completed a sabbatical on Bardsey, North Wales, and is now undertaking a review of the impacts of lighthouse attractions on migrant birds on the island.
Paul is also very active within the Northumberland and Tyneside Bird Club, contributing extensively to the club's work and publishing a number of papers in local reports.
He is currently undertaking a review of the status of sinensis Cormorant in Northumberland on behalf of the County Records Committee.
SOME RELEVANT PROJECTS UNDERTAKEN
- Assessment of potential ornithological impacts and production of Environmental Statements for over 25 windfarm sites throughout England and Scotland, including potential impacts on several SPAs and a number of Annex 1 and Schedule 1 species.
- Undertaking collision modelling with respect to potential impacts of proposed windfarms on waders, wildfowl, raptors and owls.
- Survey and assessment of the potential ornithological impacts of several opencast coal sites in Southern Scotland on an adjacent SPA.
- Survey and assessment of the potential impacts of a number of both active and proposed quarry sites in Scotland and the north of England on breeding and non-breeding bird populations.
- Survey and assessment of the potential impact of an 80km proposed powerline route, in the Highlands of Scotland, on breeding and non-breeding bird species, including impacts on an SPA and a number of Annex 1 and Schedule 1 species.
- Survey and assessment of the potential ornithological impacts of a proposed 20km powerline on the Isle of Lewis, including impacts on an SPA, an ornithological SSSI and several Annex 1 and Schedule 1 species.
- Ornithological survey and assessment of a number of proposed road realignment schemes in southern Scotland.
- Extended phase 1 survey of a wide variety of sites within the north of England, southern Scotland and the Highlands of Scotland.
- Production of the habitat management plan for Northumberland Wildlife Trust's flagship reserve, East Chevington.
- Production of habitat management plans for a number of woodland sites within Northumberland.
- Leading public events as part of a variety of community projects, inclusive of providing training in ornithological survey techniques to volunteers.
- Design of several habitat creation schemes for upland bird populations in northern England and southern Scotland.
- Lepidoptera survey and assessment of a wide range of sites throughout northern England, including Dingy Skipper, Durham Argus and Chalk Carpet.
- Research into the impacts of human recreational disturbance on the breeding bird populations of the Sefton sand dune system, Lancashire.
