CAREER PROFILE

Following her MSc at Newcastle, Rachel joined E3 as a graduate ecologist, and was promoted to ecologist after two years. She is licensed by Natural England to survey for bats and is licensed by Scottish Natural Heritage and Natural England to undertake great crested newt surveys in Scotland and England.

Her main areas of work are surveying for protected species including great crested newts, bats, badger, water vole and otter, undertaking BREEAM and CSH assessments and producing ecological chapters for environmental impact assessments. She has also participated in the National Bat Monitoring Programme.

SOME RELEVANT PROJECTS UNDERTAKEN

  • Coordination of a large number of school regeneration projects throughout the northeast, particularly in Gateshead and South Shields, including extended phase 1 survey, protected species survey and BREEAM assessment.
  • Extensive experience in great crested newt survey in the northeast and Scotland.
  • Assessment of potential protected species impacts and production of Environmental Statements for a range of sites including proposed sand and gravel quarries and open cast coal sites.
  • A range of protected species licensing works, particularly for bats, ranging from single barn conversions to hospitals and schools.
  • Completion of a large number of BREEAM and CSH assessments including schools, housing, healthcare and offices.
  • The production of a Management Plan for an English Heritage site in County Durham, including a cost effective approach to woodland management and habitat management for a range of species including bats, birds, amphibians and badger.
  • Assessment of potential impacts on habitats and protected species of re-instating a former mill with associated mill wheel at a site in Northumberland.
  • Liaison with local schools to promote awareness of ecology, including presentations at local career events.
