Dr Tony Martin has over 25 years experience in providing specialist ecological input into multi-disciplinary assessment, design and management teams, including evaluation of conservation value, literature review, field survey and report, implementation and management plan production.

He has particular experience at working creatively with landscape architects, planners and engineers, having worked alongside them for over 15 years. In 2002 he established E3 Ecology Ltd as a specialist ecological consultancy.

Tony provided call on ecological advice to English Nature, then Natural England Northumbria region, Scottish Executive and the Heritage Lottery Fund.

An experienced expert witness, he has particular knowledge of protected species, the planning and environmental assessment process and DEFRA/Scottish Executive and Natural England licences for development work.

He has a specialist knowledge of bat survey and conservation, regularly speaking at national conferences on his research on bats in traditional stone buildings.

SOME RELEVANT PROJECTS UNDERTAKEN

  • Assessment of the nature conservation value of numerous 18th Century designed landscapes and country houses and the impacts of parkland and historic buildings restoration and management works. Other parkland restorations include HLF funded work has included ecological survey and management plan input for Hyons Wood, Bantling Lime Kilns, East Chevington Nature Reserve, Jesmond Dene, Jarrow-Wearmouth churches (proposed World Heritage Site) and restoration at Gibside.
  • Evidence in Chief at PI for Durham Western Bypass, Selby Bypass, Saxmundham to Wickham Market Improvements, North of Hertford Gravel, Cable Ski proposal at Stockton on Tees, Stannington Children's Hospital redevelopment, Leeds UDP and car sales site at Weetslade Colliery North Tyneside. Musselburgh race course, holiday development at Hardwick Park.
  • Preparation of evidence and support at Public Inquiry for A1-M1 link road, North Leeds Ring Road, Burley Bypass, Hawkhurst Moor Colliery, Chorley OCCS, housing at New Hartley, North Tyneside UDP and Nunthorpe to Newby 400kV cable.
  • Project management for archaeological aspects of wind farm Environmental Statements in Fife, Northumberland, Durham, Cumbria and for three sites in Wales.
  • Ecological input to routing studies for the Western Isles project for SSE.
  • Field survey and literature research to assess likely impacts of a new overhead powerline route on an adjacent heronry and bird flight paths.
  • Ecological Assessment, including Phase 1 and specialist ecological surveys for over 200 projects including M6 Widening in Cheshire, A1 Dishforth to Leeming, A590 Newby Bridge, Defence Estate brownfield land new settlements, power and pipeline projects, field survey for water companies, house builders, English Nature, SNH, CCW and local authorities.
  • Assessment and mitigation of impacts of the restoration of two sections of the Forth and Clyde Canal
  • Masterplan for habitat and amenity enhancement of the River Don at Inverurie.
  • Sustainable flood relief proposals using washlands for the White Cart Water, Glasgow.
  • Ecological aspects of SUDs design for new settlements near Edinburgh for SEPA.
  • Ecological assessment of flood prevention proposals on the River Clyde through Glasgow and of new pipelines and water treatment works in north west Scotland.
  • Audit of Environmental Assessments for English Nature, the Highways Agency and Local Authorities.
  • Phase 1 Survey of Montgomery District (2,000km2) for Countryside Council for Wales (CCW); Phase 1 Survey and NVC survey of Herefordshire grasslands for English Nature; NVC Survey of blanket bog and montane SSSI's for Scottish Natural Heritage; Phase 1 survey of South East Northumberland (700km²). High Brown Fritillary monitoring for CCW.
