CAREER PROFILE
Following a PhD on the ecological effects of opencast restoration and gaining membership of the Landscape Institute, Tony has undertaken and managed a wide range of ecological assessment projects and provided input to over 100 environmental assessments.
An experienced expert witness, he has particular knowledge of protected species, the planning and environmental assessment process and DEFRA/Scottish Executive and English Nature licences for development work.
Tony has undertaken very extensive phase 1 habitat surveys for English Nature, SNH and CCW, is licensed for bat, newt and small mammal survey and has presented several recent papers on survey and assessment for bat species at national conferences for the Bat Conservation Trust and Scottish Natural Heritage. He provides call-on advice on protected species to English Nature Northumbria region, the Heritage Lottery Fund and the Scottish Executive.
A particular research interest is bat use of stone barns and historic buildings and the design of effective mitigation and habitat enhancement.
SOME RELEVANT PROJECTS UNDERTAKEN
- Specialist surveys for badgers, otters, great crested newts and bats. Assessment of development impacts and recommendations for mitigation including wildlife tunnels, fencing, artificial setts, roosts and holts.
- Habitat creation for little ringed plovers, barn owl, great crested newts, aquatic invertebrates, water vole, bats, and badgers.
- Ecological surveys including Phase 1, Phase 2 and NVC leading to the production of Environmental Statements for numerous schemes.
- Ecological surveys and habitat creation proposals for J Sainsbury's, Yorkshire Water, National Rivers Authority, Department of Transport, Ntec, Northumbrian Water, Housing Developers, golf courses at Redworth and Cramlington and at Pershore Airfield for Defence Estates Organisation.
- Ecological assessment of proposed opencast coal mine sites in Northumberland, Yorkshire, Lancashire, Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire, Scotland and Wales.
- Historical ecology survey of lead mines for Yorkshire Dales National Park.
- Ecological impact assessment for modifications to Blackhills Quarry, Aberdeen with particular reference to impacts on the adjacent SSSI and pSPA..
- Extensive public enquiry experience.
- Environmental Statements for three overhead power-line diversions for the A1 M1 link road. Included the detailed assessment of tower construction impacts on a wetland SNCI.
- Project management for the archaeological aspects of wind farm Environmental Statements in Northumberland, Durham, Cumbria and Wales.
- Field survey and literature research to assess likely impacts of a new overhead powerline route on an adjacent heronry and bird flight paths.
- Pre-construction surveys and environmental monitoring to minimise the ecological impacts of restoration of the Forth and Clyde Canal.
- River landscape assessment to identify the potential impacts of a water transfer scheme utilising the River Whiske in North Yorkshire.
- Phase 1 survey of the River Tweed catchment for English Nature in preparation for the sites designation as a SSSI.
- Blanket bog SSSI and SPA survey using NVC for SNH.
- Detailed ecological design for the realignment of the River Wharfe, Hellifield Beck and Long Preston Beck for the Department of Transport.
- Assessment of the ecological impacts of a flood relief scheme at Ilkley.
- Detailed design of balancing ponds to reduce flooding and pollution and also provide a rich wildlife habitat.
- Ecological aspects of the masterplan for the creation of an extension to a wildfowl SSSI through the reclamation of derelict land.
- Design and implementation of a sustainable urban drainage system with pools and ditches to encourage amphibians for North Tyneside City Challenge.
- Masterplanning environmental improvements to the River Don at Inverurie for the Angling Association. Development of bioengineering proposals to reduce erosion and restoration of a mill race to provide new spawning areas.
- Design and implementation of a country park themed on Biodiversity, as part of North Tyneside City Challenge.
- Restoration of sand dune habitats following the laying of a sewage pipeline at Seaton Carew.
- Design of habitats to enhance a strategic wildlife corridor adjacent to a proposed housing site in North Tyneside.
- Restoration and management plan for Bolam Park including ecological and archaeological research for Countryside Stewardship Application.
- Research, restoration and management plan for Gibside Estate for the National Trust.
- Management plan to standard JNCC format for Dene woodland in Newcastle City.
- Landscape and visual appraisals for Scottish Coal, Blyth Valley.
