RESEARCH Bats prefer living in up-market villages! A car transect survey allowed the bat populations over an area of 500 square kilometres of Northumberland to be modelled against Phase 1 habitat data Tony Martin had gathered for English Nature and the County Council. The usual correlations were found with bat numbers being higher in areas with woodland, diverse grassland and scattered buildings and lower in urban areas. Plotting bat numbers against a property price index for a dozen villages provided by Sanderson Young Estate Agents showed a highly significant correlation: bats prefer to live in country estates to colliery villages.
