E3 carries out a broad range of ecological surveys ranging from single visit checking surveys for individual species to complex environmental impact assessments for large development projects.

Recent commissions have included a term commission to provide advice on protected species and wider countryside issues to English Nature's Northumbria region, production of guidelines for English Nature on conservation of protected species during DEFRA funded barn conservation/restoration work and bat survey methodology guidelines for the region; the assessment of the ecological impacts of sand and gravel quarries, large housing developments, power line construction within the Scottish highlands, wind farms, several road schemes and flood prevention schemes on the river Clyde.

Protected species surveys form a large proportion of our workload. In the last three years over 100 projects involving protected species have been undertaken, including work on bats, otter, badger, water vole, great crested newt, crayfish and birds including Slavonian Grebe and barn owl. Projects have included assessing the potential impact of numerous barn conversions, throughout the northeast, on bats, barn owl and occasionally on great crested newts, the assessment of impacts on great crested newt, of a new link road, housing and industrial developments in Darlington, otter surveys at proposed mineral sites and along water pipeline routes, protection of water vole populations during a river diversion and business park construction and assessment on bird population of the proposal for an 80km powerline and proposed windfarms in Scotland. The company has held numerous Defra and English Nature licenses with respect to development works affecting protected species.
