SERVICES - Initial Ecological Appraisal

An initial ecological appraisal of a site will usually comprise an extended Phase 1 habitat survey and assessment. This will allow the habitats within the site to be mapped using industry standard methods and an initial assessment will be made as to the potential presence of protected or otherwise notable species. A provisional assessment will be made as to the ecological value of the habitats within and adjacent to the site and the likely presence or absence of notable species. Any further specialist survey requirements will be identified at this stage.

This initial appraisal will allow the identification of any key constraints to the proposed works at the site and of opportunities for proposals to contribute to local and national conservation targets. It is recommended that an initial ecological appraisal be undertaken as early as possible within a project, ideally pre-purchase, to ensure that constraints are known and that all ecological survey work can be completed during the appropriate season, minimising the risk of delays to the project schedule.
